Atletico Madrid Unveils New Starting Defender
Atletico Madrid Welcomes Matteo Ruggeri as New Left-Back
Atletico Madrid has made an exciting announcement, revealing the signing of Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta. The 22-year-old left-back is set to join Diego Simeone’s squad and is expected to secure a starting position following the departure of Reinildo Mandava. Javi Galan’s performance fell short this season, opening the door for Ruggeri.
Ruggeri’s transfer fee amounts to €17m plus €2m in variables, according to Marca. The Italian player has expressed his commitment to the team, stating that he would have walked to the Metropolitano if necessary. He has signed a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid, keeping him in the Spanish capital until 2030. Ruggeri recently participated in the under-21 Euros, where he made 16 appearances for Italy.
Ruggeri’s Journey through Atalanta Academy
Having emerged from the Atalanta academy, Ruggeri has predominantly operated on the left flank, occasionally stepping into midfield roles. Under Gian Piero Gasperini’s guidance, Atalanta often deployed a back three formation, allowing Ruggeri to shine as a left wing-back. This experience could hint at Simeone’s tactical plans for the upcoming season.
Ruggeri made his debut at the age of 18 after spending nine years in Atalanta’s youth system. He faced Liverpool in his first appearance. Following his debut, Ruggeri spent a season on loan at Salernitana, where he played a rotational role for the struggling team.
Ruggeri’s Ascension at Atalanta
Ruggeri’s breakthrough came in the 2023-24 season when he played a pivotal role for Atalanta, making 48 appearances and contributing to their Europa League triumph. During that season, he scored two goals and provided six assists, showcasing his versatility and impact on the team. Ruggeri’s performance in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen was notable, where he assisted in a crucial 3-0 victory over Olympique Marseille in the semi-finals.

In the following season, Ruggeri’s contributions were slightly reduced, with three assists in 38 appearances. Despite this, he remained a valuable asset to Gasperini’s squad, showcasing his adaptability and work ethic.
Ruggeri’s Playing Style and Attributes
With 109 appearances, two goals, and 10 assists for Atalanta, Ruggeri is known for his proficiency in crossing from the left flank. His aerial ability, combined with his adeptness at transitioning between defense and attack, sets him apart. While he excels in battles for possession, Ruggeri is still refining his defensive capabilities. It will be intriguing to observe how Simeone integrates him into a back four or continues with a back three formation.
