Atletico Madrid’s First Club World Cup Win
Atletico Madrid Secures First Win in 2025 Club World Cup
Atletico Madrid emerged victorious with a 3-1 win against Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field, marking their first triumph in the 2025 Club World Cup.
Early Goal Propels Atletico Madrid Forward in First Half
Following a devastating 4-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in their previous group stage match, Diego Simeone’s squad needed a strong response. Fortunately, they got off to a great start in Seattle, breaking the deadlock just 11 minutes into the game. Pablo Barrios found the back of the net with a powerful strike, courtesy of a well-executed cutback from Giuliano Simeone.
Atleti dominated the first half and appeared to have a chance to double their lead just before halftime when awarded a penalty for a foul on Simeone. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, sparing Seattle from conceding another goal.
Two Second Half Goals Secure Victory for Los Colchoneros
Shortly into the second half, Atletico Madrid extended their lead. A corner kick led to Marcos Llorente’s powerful strike hitting the crossbar, with Axel Witsel capitalizing on the rebound to find the back of the net.
Seattle Sounders managed to pull one back with Albert Rusnak’s goal, but Atleti quickly responded with Barrios scoring his second of the match with a close-range volley. Despite some tense moments towards the end, Atletico Madrid held on for a crucial victory.
The win boosts Atleti’s confidence as they currently sit in 3rd place in Group B, level on points with PSG and Botafogo. Their upcoming match against Botafogo will be decisive in determining their progression in the tournament.
