Villarreal’s Second Premier League Summer Sale
Villarreal Faces Potential Squad Exodus
Villarreal is bracing for a possible squad exodus in the upcoming weeks as transfer offers flood in for their players. Despite securing UEFA Champions League qualification at the end of the 2024/25 season under Marcelino’s guidance, the club is looking to offload key names to bolster their finances.
With the expected funds from potential sales, Marcelino aims to revamp the squad ahead of the new season. Talks have intensified regarding the departure of three players before the preseason kicks off in July.
Baena and Barry Nearing Villarreal Exits
Leading the pack in the potential departures is Spain international Alex Baena, who is on the verge of sealing a €50m deal with Atletico Madrid. This move is part of Diego Simeone’s ambitious plans to bring in Matteo Ruggeri and Johnny Cardoso, with the trio commanding a combined fee of €100m.
Following Baena, Thierno Barry is next in line to leave Villarreal, with Everton showing interest in acquiring him. The player has a €40m release clause in his contract, and David Moyes is eager to activate it, making Barry the first major signing of Everton’s new era at Bramley Moore.
Villarreal has indicated a willingness to negotiate slightly lower fees with Everton if the terms are favorable.
Third Departure Expected from Villarreal
While the potential exits of Baena and Barry raise concerns about replacements, Villarreal may not be done with their sales yet. Reports suggest that defensive star Sergi Cardona is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, with a €15.5m release clause in his contract.
Although Cardona was previously linked with a move to Serie A, a move to the English top-flight could be on the cards for him now. The combined fees from these three potential departures could fetch Villarreal €105.5m for the upcoming season.
