Two frontrunners vie for referee body takeover
Changes in Spanish Football Refereeing Leadership
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is undergoing a significant change in leadership after the dismissal of Luis Medina Cantalejo and his team. This move comes after mounting complaints from clubs like Real Madrid, prompting the RFEF to take action and revamp the refereeing structure in the country.

With the departure of key figures in the Referees Technical Committee (CTA), including Medina Cantalejo and his Vice-Presidents, the RFEF is now focused on finding suitable replacements. Two potential candidates have emerged as frontrunners for these crucial roles.
Yolanda Parga – Breaking Barriers
Yolanda Parga, the current head of women’s refereeing, is being considered for a leading position within the RFEF. If selected, she would become the first woman to hold such a role, marking a significant milestone in Spanish football. One of her strengths lies in her lack of association with previous controversies, particularly those linked to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira. However, her marriage to Real Madrid’s matchday delegate Megia Davila may pose a conflict of interest.
David Fernandez Borbalan – Experienced Candidate
Another contender for the position is David Fernandez Borbalan, a former La Liga referee with a wealth of experience in officiating. While his credentials are impressive, some concerns have been raised due to his involvement during the Negreira era. Javier Lozano is also set to play a key role as the potential CEO of the CTA, bringing his expertise from the world of Football Sala and national team management.
