Frenkie de Jong could leave Barcelona depending on circumstances
Barcelona Midfielder Frenkie de Jong Considering Exit
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has hinted at a possible exit from the club under certain conditions. His contract is set to expire in 2026, sparking speculation about his future in the team.
Possible Sale for €20m Unless Contract Renewal
Rumors suggest that Barcelona may entertain offers as low as €20m for de Jong this summer if he does not sign a contract extension, which would also require a significant wage cut. Despite the ongoing discussions in the media, de Jong remains focused on his game.
During an interview with Voetbal International, de Jong stated, “My contract renewal is a topic for the newspapers here, but it is not for me. I want to play football and then I will see what the club wants to do with me and then I will decide what I want to do, together with my agent and my family.”
Potential Free Agent Market Move
There are speculations within the club that de Jong might opt to let his contract run down and become a free agent in 18 months. However, the midfielder has made it clear that he will only stay if he feels he can make a significant contribution to the team.
De Jong emphasized, “If I felt that I couldn’t contribute enough, or if the team cannot compete, I would leave.”
Struggles to Secure Starting Spot
Since the arrival of Hansi Flick as the coach and de Jong’s recovery from an ankle injury, he has found it challenging to secure a spot in the starting lineup. This season, he has only made eight appearances totaling 362 minutes and was left on the bench during crucial moments in matches against Leganes and Atletico Madrid.
