The Journey to Representing Spain
Despite facing controversy surrounding his decision to play for Spain, Lamine Yamal remained steadfast in his choice. Growing up in Rocafonda, where many Moroccan nationals reside, Lamine faced pressure to represent Morocco.
A Difficult Decision
Former RFEF director of football, Albert Lugue, revealed the challenges Lamine faced in choosing Spain over Morocco. External factors, including threats to his safety, played a significant role in his decision-making process.
Lugue recalled, “The Moroccan coach and government tried to convince him, but Lamine remained determined to play for Spain. His father expressed concerns about potential repercussions in Morocco, even alluding to serious consequences.”
Lamine’s mother played a crucial role in supporting his decision, emphasizing his readiness to represent Spain. Despite the external pressures, Lamine’s commitment to his chosen path remained unwavering.
