Courtois avoids punishment, Competition Committee dismisses Atletico claims
Atletico Madrid Punished for Crowd Trouble in Madrid Derby
Following the intense Madrid derby that ended in a 1-1 draw, Atletico Madrid faced consequences for their supporters throwing missiles at Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The section of the Metropolitano stadium where the incidents occurred will be closed off for the next three matches as a punishment.
Spanish Football Federation’s Verdict on Atletico Madrid’s Complaints
The Spanish Football Federation’s Competition Committee addressed Atletico Madrid’s complaints about Courtois allegedly inciting their supporters with his celebrations for Eder Militao’s goal. The Committee rejected these claims, calling them “absolutely unacceptable” and stating that they cannot justify the actions of Atleti’s supporters.
Courtois Escapes Punishment But Faces Injury
Despite Atletico Madrid’s allegations, Courtois will not face any punishment. However, he is expected to miss Real Madrid’s upcoming fixture against Villarreal due to an adductor injury sustained during the Madrid derby. Andriy Lunin will step in as the starting goalkeeper at the Santiago Bernabeu, a role he recently filled in Real Madrid’s Champions League defeat to Lille.
