Barcelona defender on La Liga rival’s radar for contract opportunity

Barcelona defender on shortlist for La liga rival hoping to take advantage of contract situation

Barcelona’s Eric Garcia Facing Uncertain Future

Barcelona is enjoying a successful season under the coaching of Hansi Flick, with most players responding well to his tactics. However, there are a few cases where Flick’s impact has not been felt yet, one of them being Eric Garcia.

Despite making eight appearances and accumulating 448 minutes on the field, Garcia’s season has been marred by injuries and a suspension following a red card. The 24-year-old defender has struggled to secure a spot in his preferred central defensive position.

Currently, Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi are the preferred central defensive pairing, with Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo sidelined due to injuries. Youngster Sergi Dominguez has even seen more playing time than Garcia. With the return of Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez, and Frenkie de Jong from injury, Garcia’s playing time could further diminish.

According to reports from Superdeporte, Real Sociedad is keeping a close eye on Garcia’s situation and is considering making a move for him either next summer or in 2026 when his contract expires. If Barcelona fails to reach a new agreement with Garcia, Real Sociedad could potentially acquire him at a bargain price.

During the summer, Girona expressed interest in re-signing Garcia after a successful loan spell with the club, where he helped them secure a Champions League spot. Barcelona opted to retain him due to concerns about squad depth. Depending on the outcome of contract negotiations, Barcelona could have ample options in defensive midfield and central defense for the upcoming seasons.
