Simeone’s Title Plan for Club World Cup

Diego Simeone’s Message to Atletico Madrid Squad for FIFA Club World Cup
Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, has delivered a motivating message to his squad as they gear up for the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite finishing third in La Liga behind powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid, Simeone’s team secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.
Under Simeone’s leadership, Atletico Madrid has consistently finished in the top three for 12 out of 13 full seasons, clinching two titles along the way. However, the pattern of landing in third place behind Barcelona and Real Madrid has been a common occurrence.
Atletico Madrid’s Record of Finishing Third
Since the 2012/13 season, Atletico Madrid has finished in third place eight times, including the recently concluded 2024/25 season. Despite a rich trophy cabinet, the team fell short of keeping up with Real Madrid and Barcelona in the title race.

In the latest season, Hansi Flick guided Real Madrid to the title, completing a treble with the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup victories.
Simeone’s Mission for Atletico Madrid
Looking ahead to the Club World Cup, Simeone emphasized the need for change and urged his players to seize the opportunity for greatness. He expressed his desire to leave a legacy at the club and strive for more than just a third-place finish.
In an interview with Marca, Simeone stated, “The ultimate goal at Atletico Madrid is to win the Champions League. That is the missing piece in the puzzle. We are aiming for more, and finishing third is no longer sufficient.”
Simeone also reaffirmed his commitment to winning the Club World Cup, with Atletico Madrid set to face off against Paris Saint-Germain, the newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners, in their opening match on June 15 in Pasadena.
